You should first know the shape of your pond. Different shape of the pond will need different way of measuring. If your pond is rectangle, you can measure the size like calculating the volume of cube, width x length x depth in foot. If your pond is a circle, you can measure the size the way you measure the volume of half of the circular. 3.14 x half the diameter x half the diameter x depth in feet. And if the form is not regular, you can manipulate it so that you can get the exact size of your pond.

Each cubic foot can accommodate around 7.5 gallons of water. So to know the total number of gallons, you can multiply the total number of the cubic feet times 7.5 gallons.

As you know that each pond water pump has its own diameter. If the diameter of the pump is ½ inch, the pump can circulate water up to 120 gph. ¾ inch diameter can circulate water up to 350 gph. 1 inch diameter can circulate water up to 1000gph. 1 ¼ inch can circulate water up to 1500 gph and 1 ½ diameter can circulate water up to 3000 gph.

After knowing the size of your pond, you can now determine which pond water pump you can buy. It is important for you to buy a pump that can handle the size of your pump more. Pump that is sized by gallons per hour can lift one foot of height. For a greater size, the pump is sized by using gallon per horsepower (ghp).

For determining the right pumps for your pond, you need to recognize the height from the top of your pump to the top of your stream or waterfall. If your pond can accommodate 150 gallons, you will need a pump that can circulate water up to 1500 gallons per hour. Your pump flow can be adjusted to fit your need by using valve. But, you can not increase the capacity of your pump. Therefore, you have to choose pond water pump that have greater capacity than what your pond has.

To install your electrical device of the pond water pump close to the water garden, you will need an outdoor outlet for your safety. Use an outlet that is complimented with ground fault interrupter (GFIC) and place it 6 feet away from your pond. Your devices will stop the power when the water touches the wiring. Also, you should protect your cable with a conduit or plastic so that when you dig and touch it by chance, you will not be electrocuted.

You can also select submersible or external pond water pump. Submersible is placed under the water and external is placed on the outer of the pond. It makes the external pump easier to install.
